Spinach Facts

Spinach is part of the flowering plant family - Goosefoot/Beetroot also known as the Amaranthaceae family.

Excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals

Good source of protein - 1 cup provides 2.6g of protein per 100g. 

One of the worlds largest spinach producers is fast becoming China, supplying 85% of the global supply of spinach. Second on the list is US followed by Japan in third place.

The origin of the spinach plant is in fact Persia - now Iran. Spinach was introduced to China in 7th century and since the Chinese refer to spinach as "The Persian Green"

Spinach is an excellent source of B vitamins, containing B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9

An interesting fact about Spinach - the major spinach producing town of Crystal City in Texas US had a statue of Popeye erected outside their town hall

Cooked Spinach (by steaming) gives a better source of Iron than raw spinach

Excellent source of vitamin K and vitamin A

Spinach is high in oxalic acid which can make it difficult for the body to digest some of its nutrients: Oxalic acid is also linked to kidney stones

Spinach grows best in cool climates
